Explore the courageous stories of resistance during the Holocaust in this four-part Book Group led by Holocaust Museum LA docent Jenn Solomon. Each month, the group will meet in person for 90 minutes to discuss selected books that highlight different forms of defiance and resilience in the face of Nazi terror. The books chosen for this series delve into diverse narratives of resistance, from women’s underground networks to family survival in forests, and personal accounts of life under occupation.
Book selections include:
January 28th: The Light of Days by Judy Batalion, which spotlights Jewish women in the resistance.
February 25th: Into the Forest by Rebecca Frankel, recounting a family’s escape and survival in the woods.
March 25th: Story of a Secret State by Jan Karski, detailing the efforts of a Polish underground operative.
April 29th:The Journal of Hélène Berr, the deeply moving personal diary of a young Jewish woman living in Nazi-occupied Paris, chronicling her reflections and experiences during the Holocaust.
This Book Group offers participants a chance to dive deeply into the history of Holocaust resistance, fostering rich conversations about the many ways in which individuals and groups fought back. Through these powerful works, we’ll reflect on the moral, emotional, and historical aspects of resistance, bringing new perspectives to this critical period of history.
Jenn Solomon was born in Los Angeles and raised in New Jersey. She attended college on the East Coast and completed graduate studies in Paris before returning to LA in 1993. Her Polish grandparents left Poland before Hitler came to power, and her Czechoslovakian grandmother fled during World War II to escape the Nazis. Though her family rarely spoke about the past, Jenn’s curiosity about their connection to the Holocaust deepened over time. She eventually connected with the museum and completed the excellent Docent Training Class. Being a docent has been a profound experience for Jenn, allowing her to share the enduring lessons of this dark chapter in history, shedding light on the dangers of unchecked power and rising authoritarianism.
