Dr. Raul Artal was born in Bershad-Transnistria, a Nazi concentration camp in Ukraine. As an infant, he was hidden in an abandoned barn. After the war, his parents fled the Soviet Union for Romania.

Raul later met his wife in Israel, and they moved to St. Louis, Missouri. Raul's mother's difficult labor and delivery experience inspired him to become an obstetrician specializing in high-risk pregnancies. He served 17 years as chairman of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Women's Health at St. Louis University.
