About

Louis and his parents of were sent to the Hollandsche Schouwburg, known during the war as the “Jewish Theater,” where Jews were detained before deportation. At the Theater, an underground organization smuggled Louis out and took him to his paternal grandparents. Afraid to keep him, his grandparents sent him to his non-Jewish aunt in Hilversum. He spent the rest of the war hiding with his uncle’s friend. After the war, he reconnected with his father's sister Betty. In 1948, they immigrated to the United States.
